The other day I posted a picture of Henry VIII and his six wives – I found it on DeviantArt and thought it was really nice, because it was a kind of ‘family portrait’ where Henry VIII stood with all of his six spouses. We all know that according to Nicolas Sander, Anne Boleyn had six fingers on her right hand, protruding tooth, large wen and moles covering her body. In this article I will take a closer look on one particular trait of Anne’s appearance recorded by Sander, that contributed to so called “monster legend”[1]. In English translation of Sander’s “De origine ac progressu schismatis Anglicani” we read that: “There was a large wen under her chin, and therefore to hide its ugliness she wore a high dress covering her throat.
